Demographics
It's In the #s: HMW, 7/11
Yes, the number of Hispanics in the U.S. is growing at record speeds. And no one disputes that Latinos make up a sizeable chunk, roughly 14 percent, of the 294 million strong U.S. population. But the numbers are greater than what the U.S. Census Bureau revealed last month, according to data from American Marketscape DataStream. The 2005 July update puts the number of Hispanics in the U.S. at 43 million. It's information that incorporates what the Census is publishing plus input from other sources - the Immigration & Naturalization Service, the Department of Health, residential build-out and the household millage database - to make it more accurate, explains César Melgoza, CEO of Geoscape International, the Miami-based marketing intelligence firm. "It's more inclusive than the Census," he adds. In June, the Census revealed that Latinos accounted for half of the population growth experienced between July 2003 and July 2004, reaching 41.3 million - roughly 14 percent of the total U.S. population, which stood at 294 million in July 2004 (HMW Archives 6/13/05. Births to Immigrant Mothers Up Fourfold in NC: News & Observer, 7/9
The number of births to immigrant mothers more than quadrupled in North Carolina from 1990-2002, according to a study by a group that supports stronger immigration control. Births to immigrant mothers made up 16.7 percent of all births in the state in 2002, up from about 4 percent in 1990. The study, released Thursday by the nonprofit Center for Immigration Studies, estimates that 8 percent of all births in the state are to illegal immigrants. "The findings of this report show that America is headed to uncharted territory," wrote Steven Camarota, the author of "Births to Immigrants in America, 1970 to 2002."

Education
OSU's New Spanish Orientation Reaches Out to Hispanic Families: Stateman Journal, 7/9
Entering college can be exciting and nerve-wracking for anybody, but for Spanish-speaking students and their parents, it can be especially tough. To better serve the region's growing Hispanic population, Oregon State University is offering a Spanish-language orientation session Sunday and Monday to make the process easier."For many Latino families, it is hard to let their children move away from home to attend a university. I believe that one of the main reasons for the hesitation is because they are left out of the loop and do not understand the process," wrote Melinda Veliz, the Woodburn High School Community Schools Outreach coordinator, in a press release. The program, called "START bilingue," is an extension of the university's summer advising, registration and orientation program and is designed to provide Spanish-speaking families with tools to help students get a better start in college and to help parents better understand the process.
